Membrane technologies glossary

5 Scientific literature terms

This glossary can help people to understand words and terms from the field of membrane technology science.

composite
adjective
Composite is something consisting of two materials of different densities (eg. composite membranes)
Example: Usually, ZIF-8 is prepared with the composite polymer as a nanoporous membrane for gas adsorption.
ru: Композиционные
Composite membrane
Permeability
noun
Permeability is the ability of the membrane to allow the permeating gas to diffuse through the material of the membrane as a consequence of the pressure difference over the membrane.
Example: Permeation tests revealed the significant improvement in permeability of CO2 and enhancement of CO2/CH4 selectivity in membranes fabricated with high-intensity sonication.
ru: Проницаемость
Membrane permeability, principle of operation
porosity
noun
Porosity or void fraction is a measure of the void spaces in a material, and is a fraction of the volume of voids over the total volume, between 0 and 1, or as a percentage between 0% and 100%.
Example: It is very important and necessary to gather attention on this particular topic since ZIF-8 shows a high porosity, high surface areas, the best thermal stability, outstanding chemical resistance, and strong mechanical strength.
ru: Пористость
Porosity in membranes
Selectivity
noun
Selectivity is the ratio of permeability coefficients of two gases/ liquids (RA/B ) PA/PB), where PA is the permeability of the more permeable gas/ liquid and PB is the permeability of the less permeable gas/ liquid in the binary gas/ liquids pair.
Example: The conclusion that CO2/CH4 selectivity changes with ZIF-8 particle sizes which is reported in a previous work56 may be related to the different surface areas of ZIF-8 particles with different sizes.
ru: Селективность
Carbon dioxide separation by membrane selectivity
separation
noun
Separation in membrane technologies is a selectively fractionation of materials via pores and/or minute gaps in the molecular arrangement of a continuous structure.
Example: In this review, four technologies, including pure CO2 adsorption and the separations of CO2/CH4, CO2/H2, and CO2/N2 by ZIF-8 porous materials have been summarized.
ru: Разделение
Membrane based separation process.
